Overview & Highlights

Welcome to Restaurant Grosse Schanze, a hidden gem nestled in the vibrant heart of Bern, Switzerland. Located at Parkterrasse 10, it’s just a stone’s throw away from the renowned University of Bern and the busy train station, making it a prime spot for both locals and visitors alike.

Grosse Schanze embodies a warm and welcoming atmosphere, blending a modern industrial chic aesthetic with a relaxed dining experience. Its highlight is undoubtedly the tantalizing menu that features an enticing selection of both typical Swiss and international dishes. Whether you’re looking for a quick lunch between classes or a delightful dinner with friends, this restaurant provides a versatile space to savor quality meals.

Patrons rave about the generous portions and quality of the food, which caters to both vegetarians and non-vegetarians alike. The lunch menu often includes two budget-friendly options, ensuring that delicious meals are accessible to all. Annabel F. describes it as a "hípster cantine" during lunchtime, transforming into a cozy haven in the evening where the warm flavors of fondue and raclette shine. The infamous prosecco and truffles fondue is a must-try, especially during the colder months.

Notably, the restaurant also excels in crafting delightful aperitifs. Irina Filchenko shares a memorable experience enjoying Aperol Spritz and unique dishes like the Schanze curry wurst and tarte flambée, each served in a bustling yet relaxed ambiance that makes every visit feel special. The fast and friendly service keeps the energy high, drawing in a diverse crowd of students and professionals alike, creating a lively atmosphere that’s hard to beat.

One of the unique touches of Grosse Schanze is its outdoor seating, perfect for those sunny Bernese days. Although it can get crowded, the vibrant energy enhances the dining experience. As Aliaksei Syrel points out, the place is popular among students, particularly on Fridays when it stays open late into the evening. While it may not offer the most convenient bike parking, its central location and quality offerings make it worth the trip.

Whether you’re a local or a traveler, Grosse Schanze invites you to indulge in a culinary experience that beautifully balances hearty flavors and a welcoming atmosphere. From lunch to late-night snacks, this restaurant promises to be a staple in your gastronomic adventures in Bern.

A restaurant that is close to both University of Bern and the train station. It is a good place to grab a quick lunch or have coffee with friends. Seems equally popular with the University and SBB staff. Service is fast and friendly. The menu offers typical Swiss and international dishes. Usually there are two options (vegetarian and non-vegetarian) for the lunch menu, which are a budget-friendly option. There is also a selection of other dishes. Always a positive experience, totally recommend the place.

Generous portions and a modern industrial chic aesthetic combine with moderate prices to create a pleasant dining experience. The food is quite nice, and they have interesting and varied options, including many for vegetarians. The restaurant can get pretty crowded, but it also has outdoor seating.

We had a pleasant and relaxing time at Grosse Schanze We tried cocktail classics (Aperol Spritz and Hugo) and several aperitifs such as quesadillas, tarte flambée, corn dog with raclette and Schanze curry wurst Food was great as was the ambience

At Lunchtime, it is more of a hípster cantine than a restaurant but the food there is delicious and fairly priced. At night, it's better and during winter you can enjoy some nice fondues or raclettes there. Try the prosecco and truffles fondue!

Nice proportion of price / quality. Good location, popular among students. On Fridays is opened until late evening. Has outdoor sits and enough place inside. Not enough velo-friendly, nearest bike parking is quite far away.

I absolutely love this place. Besides its very central location by the train station, there is a terrace overlooking the city and the mountains which makes for a great place to enjoy an after-work drink in the Summer. The choice of drinks is satisfactory, and they offer very good lunch menus at fair prices. There is also a great crowd mix, between workers, university students, and international groups. At times it might be diffcult finding a table.

Lunch was tasty. There is a huge crowd especially on the weekdays during lunchtime. if you have a university identity card then you will get a discount. It's a self-service restaurant.

It's very close to the railway station, and still kind of a calm and green place. There is some outdoor seating. The food is good, but there is not too much choice, since it's a self-service. The menu changes every day though.
